\"Hotel<\/a><\/p>\n

The entire design project involves the renovation of 259 guest room and suites, the lobby and meeting that feature the hotel. Also apart of this stunning project is the introduction of a new restaurant in the hotel, that originally opened in 1960.<\/p>\n

The building was designed by Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen, for the airline Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) and it was Copenhagen\u2019s first skyscraper. This building is one of the most familiar and renowned examples of the Danish modernist architecture.<\/p>\n

\"Hotel<\/a><\/p>\n

Nowadays, the hotel is known as the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel<\/strong> and it is famous for being the project where Jacobsen oversaw every aspect of the design, from the architecture to the furniture. Even the cutlery used in the older restaurant was reviewed by the architect and designer.<\/p>\n

The entire space was renovated by Space Copenhagen<\/strong><\/em>, a studio established in 2005 by Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard\u00a0R\u00fctzou. Their goal was to modernize the interior<\/em> while enhancing the existing spaces.<\/p>\n

\"Hotel<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe hotel is a true landmark for design lovers<\/strong><\/em> around the world,\u201d said Bundgaard R\u00fctzou and Bindslev Henriksen. \u201cOur intention is to preserve its extraordinary character, but we don\u2019t want to turn it into a museum \u2013 we want to bring it to life for a new generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Hotel<\/a><\/p>\n

The new interior enhances some older features of the hotel like the Egg chair, the Swan chair and the Drop chair, that Jacobsen had previously designed for the hotel.\u00a0 Space Copenhagen<\/strong> worked with the manufacturer of the furniture, Danish brand\u00a0Fritz Hansen, to update the pieces using fabric from\u00a0Kvadrat\u2019s range with the designer\u00a0Raf Simons, and combined these classic designs<\/strong><\/em> with a new mirror and chair it created for another Danish firm\u00a0& tradition.<\/p>\n

\"Hotel<\/a><\/p>\n

The furniture glows in the renewed lobby, where previously existed a bar and retail space, that was removed by the architects to draw more attention to the reception desk and also create new areas for the guests to relax or even work. Marble floors<\/strong><\/em> were also one of the features maintained\u00a0by the team. They were reinstalled across the ground floor, alongside wood and marble wall panels.<\/p>\n

\"Hotel<\/a><\/p>\n

This space was opened up to create more flow between the lobby and the restaurant and bar. To create subdivisions, the architects used floor-to-ceiling wooden screens<\/strong><\/em>. One of the most recognized features of the original project<\/em> is the suspended spiral staircase, that still features the new installations with a few new details like the leather-wrapped handrails. An illuminated halo suspended from the ceiling on the mezzanine floor above the staircase introduces a contemporary element that accentuates the drama of the place.<\/p>\n

\"Hotel<\/a><\/p>\n

The guest rooms aim to take advantage of most of the light and views provided by the horizontal bands of windows that wrap the building. To emphasize the transition between the room and the view, the team re-introduced deep marble window sills. The goal of these rooms is to be warm, cozy and homely, with upholstered beds and furniture including the Fly Sofa.<\/p>\n

Currently, the renovation of the lobby, bar and restaurant, meeting rooms and a number of guest rooms is complete, with the remaining guest rooms and additional renovations set to be finished in spring 2018<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
