The biggest\u00a0art and design events<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0of the year have just wrapped up.\u00a0Art Basel Miami<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Design Miami 2019<\/strong><\/em><\/a> closed off the year in the best way possible, leaving us with incredible art installations, amazing design pieces and a dash of controversy as well.<\/p>\n

\"Design<\/a><\/p>\n

Right at the entrance of the\u00a0fair,<\/strong>\u00a0Atelier Marko Brajovic<\/strong><\/em>\u2018s Roots installation represents the mangroves of the Amazon. The project was made in partnership with\u00a0Tidelli<\/strong>\u00a0and consists of a self-supporting aluminium branch system wrapped by nautical ropes. Inside, a large rug and two traditional Amazonian hammocks invite visitors to settle in and reflect on our relationship with the environment through the immersive documentary Sacred Coca, which features a sound and visual journey through the Amazon.<\/p>\n

\"Design<\/a><\/p>\n

Louis Vuitton<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0brought big news for the fair, like the Swell Wave bookcase, signed by\u00a0Andrew Kudless<\/strong><\/em>. The furniture is the new Objet Nomade and marks the designer\u2019s debut for the collection. The release is alongside other\u00a0Objets Nomades<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0featured for the first time at\u00a0Design Miami 2019<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"Design<\/a><\/p>\n

Espasso by Claudia Moreira Salles<\/strong>\u00a0won the\u00a0Best Curio Booth<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a0Design Miami 2019<\/strong><\/em>! Espasso presents limited-edition\u00a0lamp collection<\/strong>\u00a0called Fine Tuning, combining an exotic reclaimed woods abundant in rich grains and colours \u2013 such as rosewood and pine \u2013 with niobium, a rare metal that transforms chromatically without any added pigments. Niobium is commonly used in the tech industry, but Salles turns the material into art rather than a scientific matter.<\/p>\n

\"Design<\/a><\/p>\n

For this edition of\u00a0Design Miami<\/strong><\/em>, the Italian brand\u00a0Fendi<\/strong>\u00a0invited the Swiss studio\u00a0Kueng Caputo<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0to create 10\u00a0design pieces<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and recreate the Palazzo della Civilt\u00e0 Italiana, home of the brand in Rome. The architectural icon served as a starting point for the creation of the collection named Roman Molds, which follows Fendi\u2019s precepts of bringing together\u00a0crafts,<\/strong>\u00a0technology and innovation. The pieces combine quite divergent materials such as leather and terracotta bricks \u2013 the latter modelled to represent the iconic arches of the Palazzo della Civilt\u00e0 Italiana. The bricks also gained application of specially developed ceramic glazes for these pieces creating an interesting colour palette in combination with leather.<\/p>\n

\"Design<\/a><\/p>\n

The fashion brand\u00a0Balenciaga,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0in collaboration with designer\u00a0Harry Nuriev<\/strong><\/em>, presented the Balenciaga Sofa at the fair, made with non-salable pieces from old collections, wrapped in transparent vinyl. More than\u00a0furniture<\/strong>,<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the sofa is intended as a work of art that raises the issue of environmental responsibility and encourages sustainable design practices, such as implementing programs that reduce waste and contribute to a circular economy.<\/p>\n

\"Design<\/a><\/p>\n

Daniel Arsham<\/strong><\/em>\u2018s installation at\u00a0Design Miami 2019<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is a result of the sculptural explorations gathered at an installation that mainly fictionalises a domestic setting partly conceived as a kunstkammer (cabinet of curiosities). Among some of the main pieces composing the scenario was the Cleveland Chair I, Paris Chaise Lounge I and Shanghai Chair by Daniel Arsham. There were also a couple of other interesting elements such as the Arsham\u2019s Pasadena Sea Glass Lamp, which merges his concept of fictional archaeology with a couple of technological references.<\/p>\n

\"Design<\/a><\/p>\n

The \u201cComedian\u201d installation by\u00a0Maurizio Cattelan<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0stole the show at\u00a0Art Basel Miami 2019<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0Composed of a real banana attached to the wall with just one piece of duct tape, \u201cComedian\u201d by Maurizio Cattelan for Galerie Perrotin at\u00a0Art Basel Miami Beach 2019<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0showcases the artist\u2019s characteristic commentaries \u2014 it\u2019s a hyper-realistic sculpture satirizing popular culture and offering an ironic commentary on society, power, and authority. Following the same line of America, an 18-karat gold toilet by Cattelan, this piece offers insight into how we assign worth and what kind of objects we value. The piece sold for $120,000 and was then eaten by performance artist David Datuna, in a performance he called \u201cHungry Artist\u201d, creating the most talked-about moment of the event.<\/p>\n
