If the luminary in question happens to be nine-time Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter John Legend<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, the answer is expressed most artfully in the 1960s Hollywood Hills house<\/strong><\/em> he shares with his wife, model Christine Teigen<\/strong><\/em>. A sophisticated update of midcentury modernism<\/strong><\/em>, the house reflects the spirit of a young couple putting their own distinctive spin on gracious California living<\/strong><\/em>. \u201cOur style is chic and tailored but also earthy and casual,\u201d<\/em> Legend says. To realize their West Coast vision of domestic bliss, Legend and Teigen turned to Don Stewart<\/strong>, of the L.A. firm\u00a0Desiderata Design<\/strong>, whom they met through musician Kanye West<\/strong>, another Stewart client. \u201cThe first time we saw the house we were really inspired by the overall vibe,\u201d<\/em> Stewart recalls. \u201cI told John and Chrissy that it reminded me of a Thai temple. That Asian influence was something they responded to, especially since she is half Thai.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

After gutting the 2,200-square-foot structure, Stewart reconfigured the space to maximize the loftlike living\/dining\/kitchen<\/strong> sweep that forms the heart of the house. No surface was left untouched as he sought to conjure a warm, natural ambiance<\/strong>. The purposely limited array of materials and finishes includes rift-cut teak<\/strong> for cabinetry<\/strong>, bronze panels<\/strong> for the fireplace surround<\/strong>, a sea-grass wall covering<\/strong> in the master suite<\/strong>\u00a0and basalt counters<\/strong> and floor tiles<\/strong>, the latter continuing onto the terraces<\/strong>\u2014which are bordered by lush gardens that Stewart redesigned with succulents and wild grasses.<\/p>\n

The same aesthetic sensibility chosen for the outdoor spaces\u2014call it earthy modern\u2014informs the interior furnishings<\/strong>. Once again the emphasis is on tactile natural materials<\/strong> and simple forms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the living area, vintage leather lounge chairs<\/strong> by Osvaldo Borsani<\/strong> and Suekichi Uchida<\/strong> mingle with chunky cottonwood cocktail tables<\/strong>, an understated contemporary Italian sectional sofa<\/strong>, and an etched-bronze table<\/strong> by Philip<\/strong> and Kelvin LaVerne<\/strong> that inspired the design of the entry gate. The handsome mix also includes one-of-a-kind creations, notably an Alison Berger light fixture<\/strong> bearing handblown crystal pendants inscribed with Legend lyrics. Throughout the house antique artifacts, among them painted wood panels<\/strong> from Thailand<\/strong> and Sri Lanka<\/strong>, reinforce the building\u2019s Asian feel.<\/p>\n

For Legend, the surroundings have helped fuel his creative process. Several of the songs on his forthcoming album were recorded at the living area\u2019s grand piano<\/strong>, which is wired to the high-tech home studio. \u201cThis house has all the qualities I strive for in my own work,\u201d<\/em> the musician says. \u201cIt\u2019s subtle and beautiful, but it packs a modern punch.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
