In the mid-1950s, the <em><strong>Holly\u00adwood legend<\/strong><\/em> purchased an apartment in <em><strong>Madrid\u2019s El Viso<\/strong><\/em> neighborhood. To renovate such a storied property would be any designer\u2019s dream, but for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.covethouse.eu\/blog\/eclectic-contemporary-projects-isabel-lopez-quesada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>Isabel L\u00f3pez-Quesada<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, it was more than that \u2013 it was a necessity. The apartment had been in her husband\u2019s family for half a century, ever since\u00a0Gardner\u00a0herself sold it to his grand\u00adfather, the <strong>Marqu\u00e9s de San Dami\u00e1n<\/strong>, in the 1960s. When the longtime tenants left and the family decided to put it on the market, L\u00f3pez-Quesada couldn\u2019t bear to think of another designer reimagining the space. <em>\u201cI realized I had to get one of my clients to buy it,\u201d<\/em> she says. <em>\u201cAnd when you want something really badly, the stars somehow align.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a long afterward, she began working with a young family who were looking for a home near the city center. The Gardner apartment, in one of the most exclusive pockets of Madrid, was outside of their price range, but <strong>L\u00f3pez-Quesada<\/strong> took them to see it anyway. <em>\u201cWe visited on a rainy, nostalgic kind of day, and it was love at first sight,\u201d<\/em> says the client. <em>\u201cThe layout was bad and the bedrooms were small, but my husband and I felt the potential was magnificent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a chronicled in her 2018 book\u00a0<em>Isabel L\u00f3pez-Quesada: At Home<\/em>\u00a0(Vendome), already had a new layout in mind. <em>\u201cI felt the home spoke for itself, telling me what it needed,\u201d<\/em> she says. <em>\u201cLooking at the high ceilings and incredible light, I decided to create something elegant and clean, with a neutral base that would allow me to play with colors.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.covethouse.eu\/inspirations\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=article-image&amp;utm_content=covethouseblog-avagardnerapartment&amp;utm_campaign=topID&amp;utm_term=mmachado\" some major alterations to the floor plan. A narrow <strong>U-shaped staircase<\/strong> was replaced with a <strong>gorgeously curved one<\/strong> in unfinished oak, its sleek iron balustrade topped with brass handrails. One of the former reception rooms on the lower level became the main <strong>bedroom suite<\/strong>, complete with a <strong>sunlit walk-in closet<\/strong>. In one corner of the <strong>drawing room<\/strong>, she placed a camel velvet sofa with <strong>midcentury lines<\/strong> under a marine-hued abstract painting by <strong>Donna Huanca<\/strong> and paired it with two <strong>1960s Pierre Paulin Mushroom chairs<\/strong> reupholstered in black. The opposite corner features a rustic <strong>French vintage table<\/strong> topped with huge glass vases in different colors and motifs. <em>\u201cThe way she mixes styles is truly unique,\u201d<\/em> says the client. <em>\u201cShe\u2019ll pair a valuable antique with something very rustic, almost as if to make it less serious or important.
