But even for someone who dressed\u00a0<em><strong>Billy Porter<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0in a tuxedo ballgown for the Oscars, his move from an <em><strong>antique Colonial house<\/strong><\/em> to a <em><strong>modernist dwelling with 11-foot-high windows<\/strong><\/em> is a rather dramatic one. <em>\u201cI was looking for a full refresh,\u201d<\/em> the fashion designer and\u00a0<strong><em>Project Runway<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0mentor says of his architectural 180. <em>\u201cI felt like my life was a little chaotic. The last year or two, I just haven\u2019t stopped\u2014doing shows, collections, collaborations. I was like, I need a break. Designed by <strong>RAAD Studio<\/strong> in collaboration with architect <strong>Bolek Ryzinski<\/strong>, its location near the beach was part of the draw. Siriano closed on the house in February, and less than a month later, as Covid-19 sent the country into lockdown, he and his partner, <strong>Kyle Smith<\/strong>, a menswear designer, were sheltering there full-time. In the five months since, Siriano has experienced an aha moment. <em>\u201cIt\u2019s like another world up here,\u201d<\/em> he says. <em>\u201cIt\u2019s quiet. We\u2019re completely surrounded by nature.\u201d<\/em> He\u2019s even taken up cooking. <em>\u201cWe sit down at the dining table almost every night. It feels like more real life. Among them were a pair of teak <strong>Danish mid-century chairs<\/strong> and a <strong>Pierre Paulin-inspired sofa<\/strong> that <em>\u201cwas torn to shreds, so I got it super cheap,\u201d<\/em> says Siriano. He raided his apartment and office, too. A <strong>glass coffee table<\/strong> that had spent five years in his atelier now serves as the centerpiece of his open <strong>living room<\/strong> alongside a pair of vintage <strong>Mario Bellini for Cassina chairs<\/strong> culled from his apartment.<\/p>\n<p><a <strong>white walls, lofty ceilings<\/strong>, and <strong>expansive spaces<\/strong> are the perfect backdrop for his ever-evolving collection. <em>\u201cThis architecture just felt like a way to showcase all the things I love, kind of like a gallery space,\u201d<\/em> he says. <em>\u201cMy office is an old 1800s building. I was in all these more period-like settings. I just became obsessed with the idea of light and being surrounded by nature.\u201d<\/em> So much so that he eschewed curtains throughout. <em>\u201cI want the light,\u201d<\/em> he declares. <em>\u201cWe wake up to it. I was always nervous that modernism wasn\u2019t liveable. His office plays host to his Lula settee, featuring <strong>circular back cushions<\/strong> and a <strong>bench base of white boucl\u00e9<\/strong> atop <strong>triangulated wood legs<\/strong>, and downstairs in the <strong>living area<\/strong> there\u2019s a chair with similarly playful geometric proportions. <em>\u201cI like that they look like little dresses or people,\u201d<\/em> says Siriano. After sharing a glimpse of the settee on his <strong>Instagram<\/strong>, he recently received his first commission. \u201c<em>It was fabulous. I just posted a snippet and this interior designer reached out. They\u2019re going to do it at the foot of a bed, which I love.
