Apartheid<\/strong><\/em>, an assassination<\/strong><\/em>, an avalanche<\/strong><\/em>, the Falklands War<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and a palace break-in<\/strong><\/em> are just a few of the historical storylines in season four of Netflix<\/strong> <\/em>Emmy-winning series The Crown<\/strong><\/em>\u2014not to mention the long-awaited introduction of Princess Diana<\/strong><\/em> and the U.K.\u2019s first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher<\/strong><\/em>. The Buckingham Palace<\/strong><\/em> sets stay the same stylistically, and the designer says the other sets don\u2019t necessarily keep up with the times. \u201cJust as the \u201960s didn\u2019t suddenly go Austin Powers, we didn\u2019t go Dynasty,\u201d<\/em> he says. Architectural Digest<\/strong><\/em> just released set images from the incredible Netflix series The Crown<\/span>, and Covet House<\/strong><\/em><\/a> brings them to you with a twist, take a look!<\/p>\n

The Crown<\/em>\u2019s original production designer Martin Childs<\/strong> creates his magic once again for this installment spanning from the late 1970s through 1990, turning soundstages and country estates into Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Windsor Castle, Balmoral, Mustique <\/strong>and the HMY Royal Britannia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Oscar- and Emmy-winning designer and his set decorators Sophie Coombes, Alison Harvey<\/strong>\u00a0and Carolyn Boult<\/strong> also designed the Prime Minister\u2019s digs at 10 Downing Street<\/strong>, the Spencer family estate Althorp House<\/strong>\u00a0and a royal tour through Australia<\/strong> and New Zealand<\/strong>. The production team worked on some 400 sets for the 10 new episodes (on Netflix now) and found it essential they did not all look the same. \u201cDesigning the historical sets is more of an interpretation because you have to make them all look very different from each other; that is the aim. If you follow the research, they will all look alike,\u201d<\/em> Childs told.<\/p>\n

The re-enactment of the royal marriage<\/strong> is quite brief on the screen. The interior of Winchester Cathedral<\/strong> is substituted for St. Paul\u2019s Cathedral<\/strong> and is the scene for the tension-filled rehearsal; the bride is shown here at Chelsea House<\/strong> before the nuptials. Much like the interiors, the gown, designed by Emmy Award-winning costume designer Amy Roberts<\/strong>, is a version of Princess Diana\u2019s original wedding dress with a 25-foot train.<\/p>\n

Prince Charles<\/strong> takes off for several weeks on royal duties during the engagement, leaving Diana<\/strong> to fend for herself at her new private quarters in Kensington Palace<\/strong>, where she spends her day\u2019s roller skating to Duran Duran<\/strong> in the hallways and answering fan mail.<\/p>\n
