Dechant\u2019s talents as a <strong>production designer<\/strong> for Joel Coen\u2019s first solo directorial feature, <strong><em>The Tragedy of Macbeth<\/em><\/strong>, were suggested by that final credit, 2010 Western directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. The main goal was not to create a naturalistic \u201cMacbeth\u201d, so for Dechant, this meant creating enormous interior sets with no adornment and exteriors that were frequently shrouded in mist and fog. The palace was meant to evoke a\u00a0<strong>medieval fortress<\/strong>\u00a0built into the mountainside. The way <strong><em>Dune<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong>mixes historical allusions into a relatively logical totality is a big part of its appeal<\/strong>. The medieval parts of Herbert\u2019s novel are unmistakable, according to Vermette, but rather than drawing inspiration from<strong>\u00a0Gothic cathedrals and crypts<\/strong>, he went to\u00a0<strong>old Japanese buildings<\/strong>. It was critical for\u00a0<strong>Guillermo del Toro<\/strong>, the film\u2019s director, to produce a fiery interpretation of William Lindsay Gresham\u2019s 1946 novel, which shows the sordid underbelly of Hollywood and the American Dream. The film features Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), a down-and-out circus entrepreneur who swindles the affluent with his crafty methods, with allusions to <strong>Old Hollywood<\/strong>.
