Empire Dining Table: A Design Statement With A Story
Some dining tables are designed around the simple pleasure of gathering. Others carry a much larger idea. The Empire Dining Table by Boca do Lobo transforms the familiar centrepiece of a dining room into a statement about power, resilience and the passage of time. Inspired by the rise and fall of great empires, its design reflects the belief that strength is often shaped by adversity. The result is a piece that feels both monumental and deeply symbolic.
The Beauty of Imperfection
The defining feature of Empire is its dramatic surface, where irregular cracks reveal a luminous gold interior. Rather than concealing imperfections, the design makes them central to its identity. The brass details trace the fractures across the table, creating a striking contrast with the smooth, polished surface surrounding them. The visual effect is almost geological, as though the table has been shaped by time and transformation. Its imperfections become a source of character, turning a familiar material into something unexpected.
The Drama of Wood and Brass
Empire brings together the warmth of mahogany and the reflective quality of polished brass. The tabletop is finished with a fine wood veneer, while brass details fill the cracks and extend across the legs, creating a continuous visual language throughout the piece. The contrast between the dark, rich wood and the golden accents gives the table a sense of depth and presence. Light moves across the different surfaces, revealing the intricacy of the materials and making the design feel almost sculptural.
Craftsmanship Behind the Form
Behind its bold appearance lies a careful combination of woodworking and metalworking techniques. The mahogany structure provides the foundation, while veneer application and polished brass detailing bring the design to life. Each element must be carefully finished and assembled to maintain the balance between the table’s imposing proportions and its intricate decorative details. Handmade in Portugal, Empire reflects Boca do Lobo’s commitment to traditional craftsmanship as a means of exploring more expressive forms of contemporary furniture.
A Centrepiece for Gathering
At three metres long, Empire is designed to command attention. Its generous proportions create a natural focal point for a dining room, while the combination of wood and brass introduces a sense of warmth and theatricality. Yet its meaning extends beyond its physical presence. The table is conceived as a place where conversations, celebrations and important decisions unfold, connecting its sculptural character to the rituals of everyday life. It transforms the dining experience into something that feels considered and memorable.
The Art of Resilience
Ultimately, Empire is a piece about the beauty that can emerge from imperfection. Its fractured surface, illuminated by gold, becomes a visual expression of strength, renewal and the possibility of a brighter future. The design moves beyond conventional ideas of luxury, finding its character in symbolism as much as material richness. As a dining table, it remains functional. As a piece of collectible design, it becomes a statement about the enduring power of craftsmanship, imagination and resilience.
