This year occurred the 70th Cannes Film Festival and like other Cannes Festival was a glorious event with many superstars around the world. Cannes Film Festival occurred from the 17h to 28th May and was a year of many achievements to the cinema. The Cannes Festival is the most important and prestigious publicized events in the whole world. Since 2007, Thierry Frémaux has been the general delegate of the event.

This year’s Cannes Festival poster features acclaimed Italian actress, Claudia Cardinale, who said “I am honored and proud to be flying the flag for the 70th Festival de Cannes, and delighted with this choice of photo. It’s the image I myself have of the Festival, of an event that illuminates everything around … Happy anniversary!”

BEST SCREENPLAY PRIZE (TIE)

There was a tie for the award of Best Screenplay Prize. Marisa Paredes and Park Chan-Wook presented the Best Screenplay Prize to Lynne Ramsay for the thriller, “You Were Never Really Here”. Yorgos Lanthimos and Efhimis Filippou also won the prize for the psychological thriller/horror film, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, also starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman.

BEST DIRECTOR PRIZE

Famed director, Sofia Coppola was distinguished at the ceremony with the Best Director Prize, for her brilliant feature, The Beguiled, a production adapted from the novel by Thomas P. Cullinan, and starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning. Coppola made the following statement after her win – “I like to thank my father, who taught me to write and how to be a film director, and my mother, for teaching me how to be an artist. Thanks as well to Jane Campion, for being a role model and inspiring women to be directors.”

BEST ACTRESS PRIZE

The Actress Prize went to German-American actress, Diane Kruger for her sensational performance as a woman whose life collapses after her husband and son die in a bomb attack. Aus dem Nichts (In the Fade) was directed by Faith Akin.

BEST SHORT FILM – PALME D’OR

This prize awarded by Uma Thurman and Cristian Mungiu to Qiu Yang, director of Xiao Cheng Er Yue (A Gentle Night), a short of a film about a mother who tries to find her daughter in a small city in China.

CAMERA D’OR

Presented by Camera D’Or president, Sandrine Kiberlain, the award for Camera D’Or, a part in the Cannes’ section, Un Certain Regard, was given to Montparnasse Bienvenüe (Jeune Femme) which was directed by Léonor SERRAILLE.

JURY PRIZE

Andrey Zvyagintsev won the Jury Prize for his phenomenal film, Nelyubov (Lovely), a powerful story of a divorced couple whose son disappears in the midst of one of their intense arguments.

BEST ACTOR PRIZE

Jessica Chastain awarded Joaquin Phoenix with the Best Actor Prize for its stunning and emotive performance in “You Were Never Really Here”, a feature directed by Lynne Ramsay. Phoenix portrayed a war veteran who tries to save a young girl from the sex trafficking ring.

GRAND PRIX

Robin Campillo was honored with the Grand Prix for its astonishing motion picture, 120 battements par minute (120 Beats per Minute), a film about homosexuality and the AIDS epidemic. Costa-Gavras and Agnès Jaoui presented the award.

PALME D’OR

Pedro Almodóvar and Juliette Binoche present the Palme D’Or to Ruben Östlund for his spectacular feature, The Square, a satirical drama regarding the aftermath of the abolition of monarchy in Sweden.

70th ANNIVERSARY AWARD

While Nicole Kidman could not be present to receive the prize, fellow thespian, Will Smith accepted the award on her behalf. The actress had the following to say: “I feel blessed to be able to work in this profession. The 70th celebration was incredible; it was the celebration of cinema and stories.”

Known as the Mistress of Ceremonies, Monica Belluci closed the 12-days ceremony at the Grant Théâtre Lumière.

The jury was comprised of distinguished Spanish director, Pedro Almodóvar, the president of this year’s jury, beloved American actors, Jessica Chastain and Will Smith, French actress, and filmmaker Agnès Jaoui and Italian director and screenwriter, Paolo Sorrentino.
