The Victoria & Albert Museum is a London landmark and an unmissable stop for someone visiting the British capital and loves art and culture – and as of today, architecture and exclusive design! Amanda Levete, winner of the prestigious Stirling Prize, and her architecture agency AL_A led the museum’s newest and largest overhauling project yet, and created its largest extension in a century.

The 6,400 extra square meters brought by the new Exhibition Road Quarter feature not only a new gallery, but also an alternative entrance to the V&A Museum, a shop, a café and a courtyard. The latter is depicted above and is truly amazing: no less than 11,000 handmade porcelain tiles pave the 1,200-square-meter space, forming 15 linear patterns inspired by the trusses around it. It will welcome both customers from the café and large-scale art pieces, a great idea!

18 meters below, is V&A Museum‘s brand new Sainsbury Gallery! 1,100 square meters of extra exhibition space under a folded ceiling and in a pure, contemporary atmosphere where, you’ll agree, inspiration flows free. The Exhibition Road Quarter and its gallery are also intended to be a crossing point, a less formal space linking the museum to the street. Breathtaking!

Don’t be scared by the idea of being deep underground: skylight brightens the space and gives a fresh vision of the façades of the surrounding buildings. Well, what an actual art is architecture!

Definitely, exclusive design and art is not only meant to be exhibited in museum: it can be the museum itself too. London nevers disappoints us when it reveals architecture and design projects, and V&A Museum Exhibition Road Quarter topped the city’s standards with flying colors! What do you think about it?
