Kéré is the 17th architect that accepts the challenge of Serpentine Galleries’ to design a temporary structure in its land. Since its launch, in 2000, this internationally known design invitation causes waves on the world of design.
The architect got inspiration from the tree that is used as a meeting point in his hometown. Kéré designed a building that he hopped would connect people with nature and others.
The outstanding mind created a structure that builds up to the British weather, having an expansive roof supported by a central seel Framework. This allows the air to circulate while offering a shelter during british rainy days. The Pavilion has four separate entry points.
Kéré though of designing a project that would help in the social engagement, so the Pavilion has an open air courtyard in the centre where people can sit and relax. In case of rainy days, and oculus funnels any water collected in the roof and turns it into a waterfall creating a magical environment.
At night the project becomes a source of light. Wall perforations offer the illusion of movement and activity inside of it. This idea came from inspirations from Kéré hometown. There was always a celebration at night that consisted in climbing a tree searching for the closer source of light.
