Flad Architects: Honoring The Creative Spirit In All Things

Flad Architects is a national planning and design firm committed to creating environments that enhance human potential. In partnership with leading research organizations, universities, healthcare institutions, and science-based companies, Flad designs innovative facilities, with standout dedication to detail. These advanced spaces enable the firm’s clients to make revolutionary discoveries that have a profound impact on society.

Juno Therapeutics

Flad Architects: Honoring The Creative Spirit In All Things

Juno Therapeutics believes with absolute conviction that they can engineer the cells within a person’s immune system to eradicate cancer and other serious diseases. It is this unrelenting faith along with their tireless commitment to their patients that sets Juno apart. Selected to design their new headquarters and research center, Flad was immediately infused with their compelling spirit and felt the same sense of urgency Juno was facing to help them deliver successful products to their patients. The motivation behind every design decision was to help these extraordinary people achieve their mission to fundamentally change medicine.

Rutgers University

Flad Architects: Honoring The Creative Spirit In All Things

As one of the nation’s premier public research universities, Rutgers boasts a world-class chemistry program that has made a substantive impact, not just on scholarship, but on everyday life with discoveries in areas ranging from health to energy to the environment. And as one of the top recipients of federal funding for chemistry R&D in the country for over a decade, there is an expectation that the department will continue to innovate, question, and explore. The new Chemistry and Chemical Biology Building is more than a department home. Designed to support cutting-edge research, the facility is also a new dynamic gateway for the north end of campus. The site’s generous pedestrian throughway follows the form’s length before passing beneath a transparent bridge, emerging to connect with the neighboring student center and dining hall. This LEED Gold building embodies commitment to a sustainable future.

Confidential Client

With a focus on collaborative research and interdisciplinary exploration, this leading biotechnology company seeks to deepen our understanding of human aging and age-related diseases – helping people live longer, healthier lives. To accommodate rapid organizational growth and expand capacity for translating discoveries into life-changing therapies, the client acquired an incomplete shell space located directly across the street from their main campus in South San Francisco‘s booming biotechnology sector. Seeking to transform the new facility into a fully branded, next-generation scientific workplace environment, while providing a cohesive user experience between the two buildings, the client partnered with Flad for the renovation and expansion of their newly acquired space. The resulting four-story, 93,000-square-foot expansion provides state-of-the-art laboratories, offices, conference space, and amenities to create a robust scientific workplace environment that embodies the client’s collaboration-driven culture.

UF Health

Flad Architects: Honoring The Creative Spirit In All Things

When faced with a cardiovascular or neurological diagnosis, successful outcomes often depend on the specialist devising a treatment plan around the patient. UF Health takes that treatment plan one step further. They believe that a patient should not circle around the treatment, moving from building to building to receive care. UF believes the treatment should revolve around the patient. Wanting to create a patient experience that improves the outcome, UF Health created two adjoining hospitals for cardiovascular and neuroscience medicine in one, integrated space. Providing inpatient and outpatient care at one location, the new hospital will promote physician collaboration, efficiency, and mostly, patient convenience. With the goal of putting the patient first, the facility offers amenities and resources for families without an institutional feel.

University of Kentucky

Flad Architects: Honoring The Creative Spirit In All Things

Considerable growth in the University of Kentucky’s College of Public Health over recent years has given rise to a new facility that will gather all departments under one roof, establishing a visible, modern identity for the program. Dedicated to the pursuit of positive health outcomes for all, this space will support instruction and research that addresses these important issues for populations close to home and across the world. The new building is located between the academic campus to the north, student housing to the east, and the hospital and healthcare campus to the south, underscoring the importance of interdisciplinary scholarship in our understanding of public health. Its design features a tall trellis canopy that shades a broad entry porch along the north glass façade, welcoming those who arrive from the academic core of campus as well as the student residences.

Seattle Children’s Research Institute

Flad Architects: Honoring The Creative Spirit In All Things

Founded on a promise to care for every child by leading groundbreaking research and developing life-changing therapies, Seattle Children’s Research Institute set an equally ambitious goal for Building Cure, a state-of-the-art research facility that seeks to elevate human health on a global scale. The design for this LEED Gold, 540,000-square-foot building houses ten floors of biomedical laboratory and research space that brings together scientists seeking to develop cures and treatments for childhood cancers, sickle cell anemia, and type one diabetes. A key project goal was to create transparency between the laboratory and office environments to promote connectivity and collaboration across all levels while respecting the need for a healthy, productive workplace environment with acoustic control in all spaces. As a result, all workstations are positioned within twenty feet of a daylight source with private offices organized into intimate neighborhoods that minimize acoustic and visual disruptions.
