Rockwell Group: Shaping New York’s Architectural Landscape
Rockwell Group, founded in 1984 by David Rockwell, is a renowned architecture and design firm based in New York City. Over the decades, the firm has significantly influenced the city’s architectural landscape, blending innovative design with New York’s dynamic culture. Have a look!
In December 2024, Rockwell Group revitalized the W New York-Union Square hotel, a property they initially designed in 2001. The renovation introduced a vibrant lobby featuring a relocated staircase with a colorful carpet inspired by city hues and glass-block walls reflecting New York’s architectural vernacular. Guest rooms now showcase design elements like yellow faucets reminiscent of taxicabs and lighting inspired by subway fixtures, maintaining the hotel’s signature blend of sophistication and urban energy.
In the cultural realm, Rockwell Group designed the interior of the Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC), which opened in 2023. Serving as a cultural cornerstone at the World Trade Center site, PAC NYC hosts theater, dance, music, and film events. The firm’s design includes an inviting lobby and the Metropolis restaurant, featuring undulating sapele wood ceilings and a warm ambiance that transitions seamlessly from day to night.
Rockwell Group also contributed to the residential sector with 15 Hudson Yards, the first residential building in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards development. Completed in 2018, this 88-story tower offers luxurious living spaces with interiors characterized by modern elegance and clean lines, reflecting the firm’s commitment to creating distinctive New York homes.
In 2022, the firm designed Citizens New York, a dining complex within Manhattan West. This 40,000-square-foot space features 12 fast-casual concepts by renowned chefs, two full-service restaurants, and multiple bars. The design fosters a communal marketplace atmosphere, enhancing the dining experience for workers, tourists, and locals alike.
Rockwell Group’s versatility is further exemplified in their redesign of NeueHouse’s basement theater in Manhattan’s Madison Square. Completed in early 2024, the renovation transformed the space into a stylish venue reminiscent of a swanky after-hours club, featuring plush velvet seating and a warm, intimate ambiance suitable for films, talks, and performances. Through these diverse projects, Rockwell Group continues to shape New York City’s architectural and cultural landscape, blending innovation with the city’s vibrant spirit.
