Selldorf Architects: Clear And Modern Sensibility To Enduring Impact

Selldorf Architects is a 70-person architectural design practice founded by Annabelle Selldorf in New York City in 1988. The firm creates public and private spaces that manifest a clear and modern sensibility to enduring impact. Since its inception, the firm’s design ethos has been deeply rooted in the principles of humanism. At every scale and for every condition, Selldorf Architects designs for the individual experience. As a result, its work is brought to life–and made complete–by those who use it. The firm offers services in architectural design, interior design, exhibition design, master planning, landscape concepts and strategic planning.

The Mesa at Amangiri | Canyon Point, UT

Selldorf Architects: Clear And Modern Sensibility To Enduring Impact

Located in a spectacular high desert setting, the Mesa at Amangiri is planned as a collection of 36 villas with access to the services and amenities of the adjacent Amangiri Resort. The modern designs integrate into the surrounding landscape through their low-rise scale, and through the use of materials, colors, and textures that complement the site. Each villa is organized around dramatic masonry walls and a shaded arrival court which defines a series of airy, interconnected spaces. The design creates seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor living spaces: living and dining spaces open completely to a large pool terrace and wide expansive vistas while the bedroom suites open to private garden terraces and more intimate views.

Park House Chelsea | New York, NY

Selldorf Architects: Clear And Modern Sensibility To Enduring Impact

Park House is an eight-story residential condominium building in West Chelsea comprised of 10 apartments, including two duplex penthouses with roof decks, and ground-level retail. The 26,000-sq ft building, developed by Brantwood Capital, is designed to quietly blend in with the primarily residential area and art gallery district. Located on 10th Avenue just east of the High Line, Park House’s brick facade reflects the neighborhood’s origins in the early 19th century as a residential community composed of brownstones and row houses. Glazed brick demarcates where new construction meets the extant structure.

Walden House | Edwards, CO

Selldorf Architects: Clear And Modern Sensibility To Enduring Impact

Located west of Vail within the White River National Forest Mountain Range, this 12,000 square feet house is orientated toward a new pond and the spectacular views of the surrounding Gore Range and New York Mountain. Designed as a series of smaller volumes organized around a central courtyard, the courtyard creates an intimate counterpoint to the grandeur and scale of the surrounding mountain landscape. Internal circulation is organized along the perimeter of the courtyard with the main living spaces opening directly from the corridor. The interpenetration of indoor and outdoor spaces fuses the architecture with its natural setting. Each volume has a distinct programmatic use and diverse material articulation. Local materials including copper, field rock, log-pole siding, and beetle kill pine wood reinforce the relationship between the building and its high mountain landscape.

Art Gallery of Ontario | Ontario, CA

Selldorf Architects: Clear And Modern Sensibility To Enduring Impact

Selldorf Architects is working with Diamond Schmitt and Two Row Architect on the 50,000 square feet expansion of the Art Gallery of Ontario to house their growing collection of global modern and contemporary art. Consisting almost entirely of gallery space, the proposed expansion would occupy an infill site above the existing loading dock between the AGO and the Ontario College of Art and Design. The gallery’s previous expansion, led by architect Frank Gehry, opened in 2008 with 97,000 square feet of new space. That was the latest in a series of expansions and renovations to the gallery’s downtown building. Its oldest portion is a colonial manor house dating to 1817. The current project is aiming for Net Zero Carbon certification, which would make it one of only a few museum spaces globally to accomplish this.

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego | La Jolla, CA

Selldorf Architects: Clear And Modern Sensibility To Enduring Impact

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) in La Jolla traces its origins to philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. Her last home, a modern oceanfront dwelling completed in 1916 by Irving Gill, served as the Museum’s first location. In 2014 Selldorf Architects was tasked with developing new architecture that would expand and enhance spaces for art and the public. The new design includes the renovation of 28,000 square feet of existing spaces, as well as the addition of 46,400 square feet of new spaces to MCASD, effectively doubling the Museum’s existing square footage. Selldorf Architects’ new plan provides significantly more gallery space for the collection, creates a more welcoming and clear entry, and gives greater coherence to the site enhancing the Museum’s connection to its spectacular coastal setting.

Westchester Country House | Westchester, NY

The client’s extensive collection of contemporary art is on view throughout the house and specifically accommodated within three dedicated galleries. The most public elements of living room and dining run the entire length of the south façade with floor-to-ceiling doors and windows overlooking the terrace, pool and natural pond.
