Melbourne based BAR Studio has spent more than two decades exploring the difference. Founded by Felicity Beck and Stewart Robertson, the boutique practice has become internationally recognised for its refined approach to luxury hospitality, creating hotels, resorts, residences, restaurants, and bars across some of the world’s most compelling destinations. Its philosophy is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: exceptional design should not only look beautiful, it should make people feel something.

Place is at the heart of everything BAR Studio does. Rather than applying a predetermined aesthetic to every project, the studio searches for the character already present in a location and builds upon it. Local materials, cultural references, landscapes, craftsmanship, and history become subtle ingredients within the design, giving each interior its own identity. This approach can be seen across projects such as Capella Sydney, Rosewood Phuket, Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono, and The Ritz Carlton, Melbourne, where luxury is carefully balanced with a strong sense of context.

Materiality is one of the studio’s most expressive tools. Timber, stone, metal, textiles, and crafted surfaces are brought together with remarkable sensitivity, creating interiors that reveal themselves gradually rather than all at once. BAR Studio places particular emphasis on detail and spatial quality, allowing texture and craftsmanship to establish an atmosphere that feels sophisticated without becoming overly formal. Behind its atmospheric interiors lies a sophisticated understanding of hotel operations, food and beverage, construction, and the everyday realities of running a hospitality environment. This knowledge allows the studio to create spaces that are not only visually compelling, but also intuitive and efficient for guests, operators, and owners. Perhaps the clearest expression of BAR Studio’s philosophy can be found in its own Melbourne home, a repurposed warehouse in Collingwood that retains the spirit and materials of its industrial past while transforming them into a contemporary creative workplace. Brick, timber, concrete, metal, and existing elements were salvaged and reused, while gardens, natural ventilation, solar power, and carefully considered interventions reinforce a connection with the surrounding neighbourhood. It is a fitting reflection of the studio itself: thoughtful, contextual, quietly luxurious, and always searching for the story within a place.
