Maison et Objet 2023: Designer of the Year

Maison et Objet 2023 is coming! A winner of Maison et Objet’s prestigious Designer of the Year Award is revealed for each exhibition. This is meant to recognize and honor the creative efforts of a designer who excels in the fields of design and decoration around the world. Raphael Navot, who resides in Paris, has been named the winner of the Designer of the Year Award for this January 2023 edition of Maison et Objet. Throughout the trade fair, multidisciplinary interior designer Raphael Navot will present The Apothem Lounge. The goal of this immersive project is to “portray a visual emotion” by curating an open space that will enthrall viewers with light and texture.

Designer of the Year

In 1977, Raphael Navot was born in Jerusalem, Israel. After graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven with a Bachelor’s degree in Conceptual Design in 2003, he relocated to Paris and began studying interior architecture and design. He has a diverse range of multidisciplinary projects in his portfolio, from examples of hospitality interiors to both bespoke and commercial product design, all of which highlight French workmanship and talent. He collaborated with David Lynch on the creation of the Parisian nightclub Silencio (2011), worked with Oscar Ono (2016) to produce a highly technical line of end-grain flooring, and designed 12 families of furniture for Roche Bobois, including couches, tables, rugs, and lamps (2018). The designer’s 2017 work on the Hôtel National des Arts et Métiers, however, may have been his most important project yet. Take a look at some quotes from Raphael Navot.

Noble Materials and a Philosophical Approach

“I am not sure there is a visual manner that can describe my aesthetics, although all the projects derive from similar values and hopefully establish a uniform style. Natural materials and traditional craft are always present, often bespoke for each project and with certain attributes of organic forms. I often opt to achieve an experience that is somewhat timeless. Timelessness for me is a non-decorative quality that does not refer to trends or certain motives that are associated with a specific period. I often think that good interiors seem as if they have always been there.”

Breakthrough Projects and Development

“Silencio, a joint effort between David Lynch and me, was the first project I am known to have worked on. When I look back, I can see that natural materials were used and that local crafts were already being included. However, in terms of concepts, Hotel National des Arts et Métiers represents my first true breakthrough because it covers so many facets of what I have continued to do up until this point. It was absolutely reasonable for me to redirect the guest’s attention back to what I then referred to as The Natural Future because I had complete independence from a very bold and liberal owner. We had a sizable staff, a sizable budget, and plenty of time—all things that are rare and valuable for any kind of building.”

Exploring The Narrative In The Context

“I love the idea of teaming with brands because you tap into a story, but I need to understand and endorse their story first. I think what was interesting for me with Roche Bobois is the fact that it is a French brand that works internationally and produces in Europe with high-quality and natural materials. The collaboration with them was extremely pleasant as they have incredible contact with so many artisans and manufacturers. Working on such a scale was very exciting as the possibility of manufacturing is very different than working with a gallery.”
